Transitioning from Winter Trail running to road racing/training + downhill running

Hi Eric and everyone, I have been busy building up my running in the trails and my glutes with Eric's exercises in the gym, getting ready for another triathlon season (best one ever last season thanks to the running form change (read speed without fatigue), and spreading the RWE love.. Question for you Eric (or anyone that would like to comment. After building up my runs to 90-120 minutes in the trails, including some speed work, I find myself returning to the pavement for specific race training, and my lower calves/achilles area start getting sore at the 30 minute mark. Is this just a transition due to the surface or a change in form (although I am pretty careful in holding form). I take care of by using a high arch Birkenstock and using compression socks - this tends to relax all the supporting muscles and allows it to return to normal in 24 hours.. Has anyone faced this before? - ideas are appreciated..

On a different note: does any struggle with downhill speed using Nike Free 3.0 ( I have pretty high arches) ? I switched to the brooks ghost 4.0 for more cushioning which lets me go faster downhill.. Perhaps someone can comment on downhill running form?
