I'll take your advice! I've just done a 50km trail run here in the UK - (one of the first actual, physical events with 1200 participants) and went out for a speed session the next morning and broke my 1 mile record unintentionally. Anyway, I've started on a marathon16 week training programme after which, a couple of weeks resting, then I'll start a different training plan for my next big real, physical race in May 2021. In the meantime, lots of virtual events for goal completions. You always have to push the body and mind beyond their comfort zones for adaptation to occur - this is true in all areas of life :-)
Great video Eric, as always.
Since watching your video in early June about down hill run form and not letting gravity push you down hill but running down hill, I now finish every run, running down a hill. I do this because I realised that I was just letting gravity just push me & not actually running it & my form was very poor. As a result I believe I have improved both my down hill form and speed. I now really like running down hills as I can control my decent, descend faster and not get sore quads.
Other than once a week running fartlek or if I'm feeling good pushing my pace at the moment I'm doing no other dedicated speed work. I'm not particularly fond of track work so I'm going to shock my body by doing dedicated speed work once a week at the local oval.
I'd never thought about the fact I might be avoiding this and only running in a way that I like or is familiar or I'm better at. Thanks again
Very good to see this today. Just started trail running. Omg. My turnover downhill was so much faster! Definitely a shock to my body. Am sure will feel it tomorrow. But...it was great. 1 run a week on the trails.
Great point Eric, thank you ! We get much the same weather as you do as we sit in the Foothills of the Rocky Mountains, some days are a challenge just to get out. Still I love to run out in the sun on a winter day, bundle up!
Hi Cindy - I dont think the cold itself is much of a shock to the system. But I do think that embracing the cold and the winter to do more running than maybe you are used to is a great shock. And further more the discipline of doing more, consistently in the winter is a tremendous shock that brings a great sense of accomplishment and joy.
Eric, thank you for this. Another great video. Question , is change of temperature such as winter running considered a 'shock' for the body??
