To Let Go

Yesterday I was strength training with Eric and was reminded of the importance of letting go and "just doing".  It was the end of the session and he had me do one arm presses.  Normally Eric gives me an exercise and I ask "how many reps" and then do them.  This time when I finished Eric said, "8 more," then "3 more," then "5 more".  He kept going.  At first I was surprised, then angry, and then I stopped thinking and just did them.  This exercise took my focus away from "how many" to "just… Continue

Hip Rotation

Hi Eric,

Wanted to get your perspective on optimal hip rotation. I've seen a number of drills oriented around increasing hip rotation by "running the line". I've tried this a few times and it definitely feels different. Before I invest more time in it I want to make sure this is something I want to groove in my running form. Appreciate your thoughts.

Question about 20 week marathon training program

Greetings--I just purchased 20 week Marathon Training Plan and am excited about starting. I noticed that the duration of  endurance run workouts  never exceed 1:30.  I am aiming for a 3:45 marathon. So no longer duration runs in the weeks leading up to my race(20-21 miles) ?? I am assuming that strength/endurance/efficiency developed during the 20 weeks will be enough to carry me through that distance.

Also, I plan to do most of my training on trails because I find it more…

Colorado 1/2 Marathon

After last years cramp-orific Colorado 1/2, I swore off any race that was strictly running or not endorsed by Alec Muthig ( I love you Trudge!!!).  But when "an old Army buddy" offered me his number (he couldn't run due to an injury), I said "why not?"

So that is why I ran; I couldn't think of a reason not… Continue

Problems Encountered and Lessons Learned in My First Ultra

Well, I entered my first ultra and dnf'd my first ultra.  Even with the DNF I wouldn't change anything as it was a great learning experience.   Here are some of the problems I encountered and lessons I learned while running the trails of the Capitol Forest on 30 April.

1. Running an ultra is hard, I mean hard, I mean very hard.  My legs and feet took a beating on the trails.

2. I drank a lot (almost two gallons) and didn't pee the whole time out there, not sure if it was a…
