I'm 54yrs old and like to run fasted up to half marathon distances. Usually fasting for a 14 - 16 hour period...so not eating after my evening meal at 5pm and running the next morning. I find that there's a tipping point for me, so around 16 - 20 miles I'll take smething on board such as an uncaffienated Tailwind. I'm UK based and prefer eating natural foods, so plain oatcakes, banana/apple and nuts can see me through an ultra of 50kms+
Powerful stuff Eric
Just this week a couple of times as I'm about to get ready for my run, I'm thinking I don't want to do this, I can't be bothered, I'm tired, it's late, etc, etc. However from previous experience I know this will pass so I go out and each and every time I'm so thankful that I did.
Don't get me wrong it doesn't mean that every time I have a fantastic run in "the flow", the run still might be hard or I feel heavy or I feel tired BUT I ALWAYS, ALWAYS I FEEL BETTER FOR GOING OUT WHEN I FINISH MY RUN.
My body is thankful and I have a sense of achievement because I didn't listen to my inner doubt and negative thoughts.
Fasting
Does fasting before a long easy run help train the body and brain to use fat as fuel and to become fat adapted. I've read that a lean runner has enough fat stores to easily fuel back to back marathons without the need to eat while running. The issue is training the body and brain to access this fuel. I'd love to hear your thought on this.
I personally find fasting up to 18 hours, I've never been beyond this, relatively easy. I will eat about 6.00pm and fast until lunch time the next day. On rising during the fast I'll have my normal morning coffee and I drink fluids (water) as I usually would during this time.
Thanks for posting this Eric, as I said above, POWERFUL STUFF
