I also believe we talk ourselves into "I can't" because as you say its the easy way out.
As we go to bed we say to ourselves tomorrow I'm getting up at 6.00 to go for a run, the alarm goes off, we don't want to get out of bed so we say "I can't go out because .................. what ever excuse you come up with when the night before we were keen as mustard to go out. We talk ourselves into the I can't, the I don't want to as its the path of least resistance, the easy way and like you say I can't is black and white and easy to talk yourself into.

But seriously, intriguing idea. Not sure if I need to add any misery to my runs at this point, but I like the idea of learning how to push past that feeling of "I can't" and being more honest with regard to that phrasing/language choice.
