Thought I'd start by re-posting (from the 2014 Cool Impossible thread) my Cool Impossible for 2014...

 

My original post....

"Bit of background first! I was forced to run in PE when I was at school and generally hated it because I thought I was no good and the teachers didn'r care. I left school in 1982 and didn't run again until about 1991 when I joined the army reserves, when I left them in 1993 I dindn't run until 2010! My first run in 2010 took me over 30 minutes to run 3 miles. Yet in April this year (2013) at the age of 48, I ran a half-marathon in 1:28:29 - and that was before I discoverd the Cool Impossible. That half-marathon time has put me in the top 4.5% of all half-marathon runners in the UK - that's all runners not just my age group. I want to improve on that time further, and whilst it might be a challenge it's a very worthwhile challenge for me and I've got a dream of being inside the top 4% in the UK.

So my 2014 Cool Impossible is to be inside the top 4% of all half-marathon runners in the UK by the end of the year - a great way to mark my 50th birthday in October 2014

Updates - I reckcon (to get well inside the 4% mark) I need to achieve a 1:25 half marathon. An becasue I'll be 50 later this year my challenge will be called "1:25@50"

The other day I posted "Don't ask yourself "what's stopping me?" instead ask yourself "what do I need to do to get my goal?" #CoolImpossible"

So this blog will be just that - what do I need to do? No self doubt or excuses - just a solid plan of action :-)

was wondering, has anybody done any adaptation of the CI programme to make it more race / pace specific?

many thanks Andrew makes perfect sense, was wondering if i needed to work on that mile time. i can do that weekdays whilst working on marathon distance long runs at weekends. cheersfor the website link as well

Hey Rich, I think I'd look at working backwards using McMillan Running Use that to figure out what you need to run 10k, 5k, 1 mile to hit a 1:25 half and then build up from the shortest distance from there.  E.g. For a 1:25 half it suggests you need to be able to run a 5:17 mile. Work on that, then the 5k goal, then 10k, then half. 

You're close, but the calculator suggests you may benefit by increasing your short track speed.

Hi folks,so whilst I take a few weeks off to chill from this years running and last weeks CI attempt (and also to recover from the running induced piles - horrible) most thoughts turn to preparing for London marathon next April which I'll be running with my wife and which I'm very excited about. But my main aim is still my 1:25 half marathon - I've looked over my mile tests my best results over last year or so are 5:56, 5:25, 5:55, 6:02 - the 5:25 was a big big effort, but the others were reasonable hard but without collapsing in a heap afterwards. To get my 1:25 I need to run 6:29 / 6:30 average, so I need to figure out how to get those 6:00 min miles tests expanded out to 13.1 miles, accept that I might not maintain a 6:00 min average and the times will drift out towards 6:30, but currently they are drifting out too much to 6:45. Any thoughts?

Now got final results from Sunday, I was 569th out of 14,718 runners, time was 1:32:26. The age categories are different from the standard UKA, I was in MV45 which runs from 45 to 60, and out of 1696 runners in that category I was 68th (fastest in that category was 1:19:16)

Gutted for you that you didn't get your 1:25, but it sounds like you're far from defeated. Get yourself to Cardiff next year. Flat, fast, guaranteed PB :-) http://www.channel4.com/programmes/triathlon-endurance-events/4od#3...
