I'm doing the 8 week training package and coming up is a workout where the main set is zone 2 with 20 second pick-ups every 8 minutes. My question is -- are we supposed to stay within zone 2 during the pickup or spike up into higher zones during that time?
Hi Vanessa - hope things are going well. The pick-ups should be done at a "self-selected" harder pace than zone 2. They are too short in duration to use HR as a parameter, so just "pick-up" your pace during that time and get the legs moving faster than your zone 2 pace. That is the idea, to just give the legs a change in pace. They should not be a max effort sprint...again, just speed p a bit based on how you feel.
