While doing the 8 week training package I've transitioned to exclusively running in my nike free everydays. They are so comfortable. But I've noticed that my feet have been feeling pretty sore and tired in the evenings. So I'm thinking I need to occasionally wear a shoe that gives my feet a bit of a break and protection. I know you have already recommended some sportiva and brooks models. Are there others that you have checked out or would recommend ? New Balance? nike Pegasus? I mostly run on trails and dirt roads.
I know that I'm supposed to look for low profile, lightweight, neutral shoes but there's a mind-numbing amount of shoes at my local store that fall under that category. so any direction would be great. I will definitely check out the models that you have already recommended.
Recommendations from anyone on the site would be great too. Thanks!
Hi Vanessa - Good to hear from you again. I just picked up a pair of the new, New Balance 100 trail shoes. These are extremely light, with a great profile. I have a narrow foot, so they fit kind of wide on me. The rock protection is excellent and could be good for your dirt roads and trails. These are very minimal shoes. I have used the Brooks Cascadias as Matt suggested. They are great shoes for longer runs and mayeb a great shoe for you to start transitioning to a more minimal shoe, as the cascadias are pretty heavy and clunky once you get used to a lighter shoe.
I love the La Sportiva Fireblades, as they are kind of my "catch all" shoe up here in the Tetons. I just finished a 2 day custom camp and we hit snow, rain, mud all with over 6,000 feet of climbing and these shoes took everything with no problem. I tend to need a lot of rock protection, as you might need down your way on your trails....so, another good option. The Fireblades are on the eavier side, but the profile is perfect, which really helps keep the ankles stable in rocky terrain.

Hi Vanessa, as you mentioned, Eric had recommended Fireblades in a previous forum response, and on that recommendation, I gave them a try. My usual running course includes asphalt and coarse crushed stone along a railroad right-of-way (this stuff is the worst running surface I have ever encountered), and my long runs are on dirt/gravel roads, and the Fireblades have worked great for me. They have very little cushioning, which I like, but an ample plate in the forefoot to protect against rocks. I had been running in Montrail Streaks, which are advertised as a trail/road shoe and fit my wide foot great, but I found that they had too much cushioning, especially after running in five-fingers for a while. Best of luck finding a shoe that works for you.
I have been advised to just wear my normal Asics road shoes for the Copper Canyon Ultra. The gut who advised me has just finished the Jungle and is due to do the MDS and has lots of ultras under his belt. I am swaying towards the Cascadia but if I don't need new shoes maybe I will stick with what i already have.....what are your thoughts?
Hi Kevin - I would recommend you run in the shoes you END your training in. It is possible by the end of the training program, you might be in Cascadias or other minimal shoes, so I would make your shoe choice at that time...not now. - E
So I'm going with the fireblades. So far I'm loving them. I tried the Cascadias first and they were extremely comfy and squishy - I really liked how they felt. Apparently they were too squishy for running since my joints didn't feel so great after the run. The fireblades seem to provide the stiffness that I need as a break from my Frees but they aren't over-cushy. I never would have thought that my body would prefer the less cushy shoe -- go figure.
