Hey guys, just looking for some opinions on the best way to tackle moderate downhills - at the moment I'm alternating between shortening my stride and quickening my pace to counter the additional momentum, or keeping my pace more constant and allowing my stride length to increase, trying to figure out which is more comfortable. Is there an agreed, definite answer or is it each to their own? Whaddya reckon?

Check out Eric's discussion "are you overstriding?" it gives some good advice and pics on good form gait...that sliding into your shoe you describe sounds familiar and may be a sign of overstriding downhill. I did this when I started running more downhill trails. You shouldn't be sliding in. Think of stepping over small logs, that will help keep you focus on you knees being the driving force instead of your toes/feet.
