Hi everyone. To those of you who have run a marathon with a HRM: how do you decide what to target for the marathon race? Do you go by feel and trust the training? Or settle into a HR under threshold and hope for the best? I really have no idea how to approach it!

Hi Jeremy, I'm not a fast runner, so when I ran my second marathon, I did it based strictly on heart rate. I ran pretty much most of the race on fat and took in about 1000 calories during the entire race. I did my best to keep my heart rate at about 70% (based on the Karvonen formula), that meant some walking in the latter stages of the race. Basically, I wanted to enjoy the marathon, vs having to endure it.
