This is just a last minute Hail Mary, I know, but it's worth a shot.  I am about 5 pounds heavier than I'd hoped to be 5 days prior to running the Mohican 100, and I'm wondering if it would be healthy as well as advisable to work to drop 5 more pounds before the race and if so, is there any advice on how to do it?

I think this would be a bad move Chris.  Your body will need fuel during the week loading up to the race and because of your taper and peak, your body will be rebuilding as you approach the week and you will be very hungry and need the fuel.  So I would not try to eat less in an effort to lose the lbs.  Many times during this taper/peak, your body is burning a lot of calories rebuilding, so you may find you might lose some weight naturally.

If you go into a 100 miler depleted, you will not be strong and the benefit you are looking for in being lighter might be seriously compromised in loss of strength and energy.

AND, reducing fuel during the week is stressful to the body, when it should be resting and preparing for the race.

You will lose 3-5 pounds in water weight during the race anyway - go in 5 pounds over and be strong.

Hope this helps and keep us posted on the race - E

Thanks for the advice, Eric.  Really appreciate it.  I figured that was the right path.  Great book, by the way.  Very inspirational.

Have a great race and let us know how it goes.

And glad you enjoyed the book.

Eric, race went great. Just lost strength in right leg by mile 78, must have been lack of salt. But finished in 24:56 and 23 rd place out of 205 starters and 108 finishers. Glad I didn't drop the weight. Thanx.
